I am particularly interested in your opinion about this documentary given that we are discussing pedagogical models and theories from different parts of the world. Please watch the documentary, prepare some popcorn and a fresh beverage and enjoy.

After watching it, select one of the following questions and write your answer for everybody to see and share. Please feel free to react to your classmates comments, if necessary.

  1. Is schooling or formal education fulfilling the demands of young children and teenagers? Why or why not?
  2. What elements of the active schools approach are you particularly drawn to? Why?
  3. Is promoting competition among students a good practice? Why or why not?
  4. One of the pedagogical principles supported by the active school approach is “Students go to school to succeed, not fail”. Following this principle, what changes would you implement in your school to guarantee successful learning?

  1. Is promoting competition among students a good practice? Why or why not?

I believe that students must be taught to be competent, but not to compete among them. I consider that promoting competition can lead to students feel discouraged, they can feel that they are less than others, which would not lead to anything positive on the contrary. They need to learn how to support each other, to work as a team and learn that if they work together towards a common goal, they'll succeed!

  2. I think both are responsible for the demands that students need for further development in the country, as both teacher and education play an important role in the formation of each individual and cannot be separated or one of the other.
The teacher and the student are the main actors in the cast of traditional and formal education, now it is in re design of all the Educative Process, because of the deep changes that have destroyed most of the paradigms leaving uncovered the terrible state of the relationship among them and the low quality of it. Eventhough some traditional teachers think the opposite and they keep on defending their valuable traditions. Most of teaching co-workers agree on we need a real transformation of our teaching practice and also the concept or teacher needs to be redefined in the world.
The educative practice of teachers is a dynamic and reflexive activity that has to do with the interactions between teachers and students. It is not limited to the concept of teaching, this means that the Educative Process inside the classroom include pedagogic intervention occurred before and after the interactive classroom processes. It is important to be reflexive about three dimensions to evaluate the educative practice of teachers. 1) The didactic thinking of teachers and teaching planning; 2) the educative interaction inside the classroom and 3) the reflection on reached results.
The reflection among these three dimensions is interdependent, this means that each one of them affects and it is affected by the others so it is necessary to treat them in an integrated way. The proposal developed in this article considers that improving working teaching programs must be taken from the evaluation of teaching practice and later teaching preparation must be taken into account.
The society needs professionals able to make changes that is why we need them to be sensitive about searching for solutions to diverse problems and feed them with knowledge of countable techniques and commit them to the profession they have chosen.

  3. La Educación Prohibida

The behavior of students nowadays is very different compared to the ones in the past, even their needs, preferences, ways of thinking, etc... That's why when teachers try to implement the same teaching routines , they get negative responses from the students.
It is very important that as teachers we find different teaching strategies for our kids, because we don't want them to memorize or learn "just because its in the curriculum", we want them to absorb, to understand, to learn how to APPLY what is being taught.

  4. La Educación Prohibida seeks to make constructive criticism about the shortcomings of the educational system today and, above all, show ideas and education alternatives. The objectives of the film include: promoting the development of a comprehensive education of the human being which respects the processes of people, especially children. Young people, parents and teachers to communicate the importance of education in our lives. To encourage a change in awareness of the forms of education, stressing the need for an active and responsible participation of the community. Promote conduct based on the culture of collaboration instead of competition culture.

Is promoting competition among students a good practice? Why or why not?
I think healthy competition should exist. People often forget that competition does not always mean children/adults battling it out to see who's first or 'the best', it should also include self-competition. Self-competition is a great motivator too, children and adults want to succeed.
Providing the opportunity for competition allows for progression. In life we learn from our mistakes, losing is not necessarily a mistake but we can learn from it. Competition also allows an adult or child that they might not always win, or that they might not always be first, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.

  5. After watching and listening all the experts talking about the change that must have in each of the formal or informal schools, I chose the question number four and share with them the following to guarantee successful learning:

First we must study us as people or teacher, if we are grateful for what we have and what surrounds us, after this we can help easily our students.
Listening comprehension your dreams and goals and help achieve them.
Create an atmosphere of love and unity among them.
Change these old rules to participate and get involved and make them feel important.
Let them decide not decide for them guide with wisdom and respect.
As a teacher must start the change, and make education an enjoyable experience for life as there is no manual we build ourselves our own.

  6. La Educación Prohibida is an innovative approach that tries to reconnect human development to nature. Based on multiple educative pedagogies, place children in the center of the world, promotes cross-curricular activities reinforcing cultural heritage, and developing mind and soul in a healthy environment.

What elements of the active schools approach are you particularly drawn to? Why?

Personally, I am particularly engaged in the vision of the stress-free environment when it comes to education. Active schools promote group cooperation in order to achieve a holistic learning, education must not be circumscribed to certain areas, a common practice in many education systems, as humans have an innate capacity to create through observation, experimenting and creating. Learning is a constant process; it does not end when school or college is over. We must encourage in our students active participation in every process; they must feel accepted, nourished, loved, being able to express their thoughts, to communicate, to develop their own personality, schools and families playing a major role, and reconnecting children with their surroundings, with nature. Families are the cornerstone in this process, providing emotional support, love, and collaborating side by side with educators.
Schools are the fertile breeding ground in which children will learn and acquire knowledge. Student-centered programs provide not only academic, but education for life, where strengths and values matters, where failure is not a result but an opportunity to improve and transform lives and societies.

  7. Is promoting competition among students a good practice? Why or why not?

The movie clearly lines out that competition shouldn't be promoted in schools. Throughout it we hear different comments regarding this controversial topic. The following paragraph highlights some of the more relevant opinions about competition in "La Educacion Prohibida":
Each person is unique, singular and therefore we can't define what number we can assign to a student. The best students obtain recognitions and receive rewards and those who don't do well are scolded. Every time there is a loser someone feels bad. We are constantly talking and searching for peace but nobody teaches for peace, we teach for competition and competition is the beginning of war. The education system promotes competence, individualism, discrimination, conditioning, emotional violence, materialism, etc.
schools have turned to be places where people are chosen for jobs or projects depending on their capacities and qualifications.
The current school structure doesn't worry about the person as a human being. Every person a has different attributes and has emotions as well. If I ask a child or demand from him/her more than what he/she can give I start generating stress on him/her. It doesn't matter if I make a mistake because I'm learning, nobody has to win in the classroom , we are all here to improve.
We are training kids to do something because this is how they'll get a prize and therefore they learn to speculate, to step on top of others, to lie and to be careless as of who is next to me. We teach and promote persons to stay away from others. Grading is a type of competition.
    Comments:
Competition shouldn't be encouraged among our students. What we need to stimulate is the desire to learn, to explore, to discover, to seek for more knowledge, to set personal goals. Self esteem is very important and competition many a times discourages students, makes the learning process a lot less fun, creates a high anxiety environment and the student looses interest/motivation.
It is very important to keep in mind that students have emotions and that their emotional development is way much more important and fragil than the academical development. The academical development will naturally come along if his/her emotions are stable/healthy.
Absolutely important: teach them how to manage their freedom.

La Educacion Prohibida give me an idea of like education is not allowed the participation to the students but only is given by the teacher's authority aside from feeling and thinking student. It is time to let them participate, and especially to listen to student and make them an active members in each of the school experiences, and begin to teach real things in life, of the society in which we live to really help the human being to be better and give the best for our country. As a teacher we have to start to be different

In my opinion NO becouse young children and teenagers are not heard, is imposed education what teacher wants them to learn not what students want to know and learn and it is not taught to deal with problems of daily life.

  10. 3) Yes and no, you have to see how you apply competition with your students and on what you want to get out of that competition. The best is to show them how to work in groups so they can get their ideas together and make a better job than just having them do individual work in which they start to compete with one another. Two or more minds putting ideas together work better than just one person putting his own idea together.

  12. First and foremost I would like to say that I don’t believe assigning grades is the equivalent of a competition. A competition is when only one person can get the maximum prize (1st place) when we give assignments such as homework, projects, or class work everyone in our classroom has the opportunity to score 100%. For example our students participate in Sports Competitions where only one team is the Champion per say they also participate in the Music Festival where you earn a grade but everyone has a chance to earn superior, thus this is not a competition, 10 bands can earn the maximum award (superior Score). I agree with many of the aspects in the documentary but this is not one of them. Some students are happy with earning an 80%, others are quite comfortable with a passing grade, it is just a select few that concentrate their energy in attaining the highest grade, these students are in competition even with themselves. For example if everyone in the class earned an 805 and they earned an 89% they will not be happy because they want a 90% or above. Besides the documentary says that we shouldn’t group students according to their age because it is not realistic, in life we mingle with people from all ages. If we apply the same principle to grades it is not realistic not to assign grades. We will be “competing” for grades in the university and then competing for jobs. Grades are not the problem. To quote Albert Einstein Everybody is a Genius. But If you Judge a Fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid. By quoting Einstein I am not saying that everyone is a genius. But that everyone has the ability to learn. The teachers must find a way to teach to students using different techniques. Grades are necessary to keep track of progress. Grades help teachers understand what works with some students and what works with others or that you have to teach a subject in a different way. Basically I believe schools are they to teach students that it possible to learn and to obtain knowledge. Yes you might forget it later on in life but you learned how to go about. Paola Matamoros

I would like implement 2 things: one would be making learning fun, because I believe we learn faster and broader this way. We could assure children would be learning 110 percent of the time and their growing would be limitless. We would be facilitators instead of instructors not forcing learning but being an active observer of it happening. The second thing would be to integrate nature all the way to use their senses to develop human capacities to embrace our own nature as well! Soy Lucy by the way!

  14. Is promoting competition among students a good practice? Why or why not?

I saw the video and it was very impressive because as teachers sometimes we do make mistakes with our students. Private school promote quite many activities on students that somehow students tend to competite among themselves. As teachers we have to have clear ideas and knowledge about the differences that all individuals have. Students are persons that deserve respect frolm teachers, parents and people that surround them. Competition brings anger, hate, misery for the ones that have difficulties and can not reach certain academic goals. Students begin to hate one another because, excellent students make them feel less or not valuable. Students with these kinds of problems feel worthless and incapable to acquire or reach knowledge. And students who are known for the best ones, somehow they enjoy being on the top and crash the others without much care. Teacher must create an environment on which all students will feel accepted and respected. Education is about trying to do your best in learning to understand the world around you. This isn't a sport like football where you battle head to head to be the best. The whole point of school should be about learning and not competition. Competition in school just causes most people to say I'm smarter than you and pretty much there is nothing you can do about it. It is discouraging and makes learning a lot less fun. Winning isn't everything.

  15. Is promoting competition among students a good practice? Why or Why not?

Competition is always in our life but we as a teacher should teach the students that competiton is not important, Why? because everyone is unique and have different skills to develop and everyone is different they are not machime to decide which one is the best or which one to choose, in that way they will not compet between them, they have to learn how to work or share their habilities and skills with others in a positive way as a team to be succesful getting a common goal . promoting competence between them it can lead them to be always fighting or feel that they are less than others.
competition shouldn't be encouraged among our students. We need to stimulate them in different way to learn, to explore, to discover, to seek for more knowledge, to set personal goals. Self esteem is very important and competition many a times discourages students, makes the learning process a lot less fun, creates a high anxiety environment and the student looses interest/motivation. Teach them with love and a pleasant environment they will feel that they are so important in setting their own goals.

  16. ''La Educación Prohibida'' Was a great Argentinan documentary. It questions the form of education, and it shows as well how to understand it from different pedagogical views and opinions. Topics include the history of School system, authority and Power in schools, evaluation and segregation of students, social function of educational institutions, and the role of teachers and parents.

  17. Is schooling or formal education fulfilling the demands of young children and teenagers? Why or why not?
Not entirely, children now a days live in a modern world with so many different tools that we didn't have in our days. In most schools teaching methods are still the same, teachers teach with the same methods they have been using time ago, dictating, copying in the board, teachers talking all the time and not even letting the students express themselves. We have so many students in our class that we don't give our attention to each one of them all the time. They spent 7 to 8 hours in school and most of the time sitting in a chair. I agree that children don't want to go to school Monday mornings because they feel bored, tired or unmotivated , most of them feel with low self steem because of what the teachers or classmates make them feel. For example that they are not smart enough. Teachers should let children express, create, and share what they have to say, teaching in a dynamic hands on way were they can learn through exploring, playing, interacting, and demostrating so thy can achieve their intelligence. Teachers should use different teaching methods according to the necesities of their group of students and change them if needed so they can fulfill these needs. We teachers play an important role in children's life so let's teach with love and care.

I really enjoyed this documentary because it really makes you think and auto evaluate yourself on how you are as a teacher, I discovered and learned a lot from this and gives me a whole new vision on teaching and student-teacher relationship. We have a great responsibility on our hands, we must understand that every child is a genius and they will show it in diffrent ways , we must always plan our class in a dynamic way with updated information for them to be amazed and anxious to keep on learning,

  19. is formal education fulfilling the demands of young children and teenagers? why or why not ?

according to the myth shown at the beginning of the documentary, prisoners could only see the shadows of reality. none of them could experience any of what was outside so any of them could actually learn. all they could see had no real meaning for any of the prisoners so everything they saw was simply useless.
schools nowadays are not dedicated to generate excellent results, and even when they think they are in that path, excellence is centered and based in contents and formal knowledge.
what is wrong with formal knowledge? in my opinion, formal knowledge can make sense to teachers, but for students, all they see is shadows.. just like the prisoners in the cave. all that formal knowledge, kids cant grasp the big picture of WHY that is being taught to them, and when they cant make those connections, there is no learning. so all they have left to do is, with no choice given by their parents or teachers, keep looking at shadows that make no sense to them for as long as we make them.
how can formal education satisfy or fulfill demands of young ones if school itself is keeping them away from what really matters to them ? kids want to feel, ask, explore, build..but school is all about control, fulfillment of rules. order, routines set by others not by themselves, being quiet, not questioning their teachers or their way of learning...
are children happy with this processes? not at all. most of them see school as something horrible, obligatory and tiring. can they really learn while feeling that way when human emotions is what runs their lives?
children need a space where they can make a sense of themselves.
when we were young, we learned how to ride a bike by getting on it and experiencing what balance and force meant. someone could have told us a million times that pedaling was the key to keeping balance, but we would have never learned by just listening to those words.
just like Paulo Freire once said : " estudiar no es un acto de consumir ideas sino de crearlas y recrearlas".
children spend waaay too much time listening to nonsense words in a classroom. or cutting, pasting, reading, and singing about things they have no interest in. all this time is taken away from them. time they could be using to explore what they like, building, this way, their own knowledge and their own meaning of the world they live in. finding their way in life. time where they could have the freedom to learn what they want, how they want it, when they want it.
so that is when we, as teachers, need to choose whether we will be the ones showing the shadows to children or are we going to be the prisoner that had the chance to go out to the real world and came back to the cave to set the others free from ignorance.

  21. Is promoting competition among students a good practice?

The movie declared that competition should not be promoted in schools. Each student Is different and unique, which can't be measured with a grade or number. Teachers think that promoting competition encourage students to be the best of the best, ignoring how this affect negatively on them, specially on their self esteem and personality. Even though we want our students to succeed, as teachers we must look for a strategy to stimulate students the desire and iniciative to learn and esperiment, making mistakes and have a positive and funny environment in school.
